He was 2 when a high fever led to a permanent loss of hearing, at least until he got older and underwent cochlear implant surgery. This allows him to hear quite clearly with his left ear. HSDB’s high school is 9th – 12th grade. To graduate from HSDB with a Hawai’i High School Diploma, a student must earn a minimum of 24 credits. Students may complete these 24 credits in 4 years or stay additional years until age 21 to complete the 24 required credits. The Club was established to support HSDB in many different ways from sponsoring an event to the fundraising that helps HSDB. There are two types of membership for HSDBAC: regular and associate.

This is exactly the task GRAMMY Award-winning Honoka'a Jazz Band chose to take on April 17 when they performed at the Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind (HSDB) as part of its 2015 Big City Tour. Comprised of Honoka'a High students, the band performed music while the HSDB personnel sang songs.
